From the perspective of the local government it should be taken into consideration as having a significant potential for local economic and community development. This potential can be deployed for achieving the common good. The aim of the article is to emphasise the role of local governments in building and maintaining bridging social capital in rural areas in Slovakia. This type of social capital plays an important role in the formation of Local Action Groups.
