    AnnotationThis paper presents a brief background of the introduction of the service-learning strategy to education and presents relations between service-learning and Slovak language and literature. The evaluation of a survey carried out among students of the Slovak language and literature in all study programmes of the Faculty of Arts, Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica is a part of the paper. The objective of the paper is to determine the needs of the community and the individuals, and the students’ ideas on how to contribute to future satisfaction of the identified needs. Besides the interest in the development of more universal skills such as the organizational and communication ones in particular, the needs closely linked to the object of study were also specified. These are the needs to improve the art of recitation (diction), to be able to choose an interesting text or its part with respect to a target group and objectives, to process a text in a creative manner, and to encourage readers’ interest and reading literacy efficiently and creatively. The second part of the paper consists of a concise reflection on the basic issues of reading literacy and a few activities focused on the support of readers’ interest development. The conclusions implicitly react on the fundaments of the service- -learning strategy and introduce the basic lines of the “Univerzitná noc literatúry (University Literature Night)” project. Regarding its nature, the project is a suitable and interesting activity, reflecting the intersection of the identified needs, and its implementation enables the satisfaction of the needs in respect to all participating units
