AnnotationMostly as a reaction to overcrowding in prisons, electronically monitored house arrests became the most widely used alternative to the classical method of punishment in Europe, imprisonment. The main objective of the paper is to use available European evidence for a comparison of the two alternatives from an economic viewpoint. Official or scientific comparisons have not yet been made due to unavailability of data about the costs of the two alternatives in the EUROSTAT's ‘Crime and criminal justice database’. For our research, we have used the data provided by selected European countries by means of responding to surveys carried out under the auspices of Council of Europe. Using the data from selected European countries that have not reported their incompleteness, we have found out that the daily costs of electronic monitoring of offenders are on average roughly only a quarter of the daily costs of imprisonment of offenders
