$a A forgotten dissertation of Slovak Lutheran priest and Enlightener John Laurentzy The main obstacles of insufficient education of the Jews and Gypsies (1814) and the circumstances of its creation The study interprets in the broader cultural and historical contexts and from the imagologic perspective a short dissertation of a Slovak Enlightenment and evangelical priest John Laurentzy. In the study, this scholar, focused his attention on two divergent ethnicity and language - two "tribes" - Jews and Gypsies, in order to discern them potential allies and within his vision of a common European culture, perhaps even to distinguish future friends and brothers. On behalf of the Enlightenment dream of European culture, Laurentzy saw strongly multicultural status quo of his country as something that calls for a significant correction, whose core would be particularly overcoming of the isolationism of some groups, more cooperative mutual opening up and sharing of a common cultural and civilizational minimum. Therefore, in the thesis, he focused attention on two communities which he saw to be problematic and tried to identify the barriers keeping from their education. Recipe of this Enlightenment cosmopolitan can be read as a challenge to assimilation or, more precisely, to the assimilation to each other into the next higher common, a little vague, but definitely transnationally defined European culture. 463 -1
