AnnotationExact data on the distribution of noble crayfish (Astacus astacus (Linnaeus 1758)) and its habitat characteristics in central and west Slovakia are generally lacking. Deterioration of environment and threat of invasive crayfish species create a need to address those questions more rigorously. We investigated distribution of noble crayfish from 73 sites at 10 streams in the Štiavnické vrchy Mts. and Krupinská planina Mts. (south-central Slovakia). Presence of crayfish was recorded at 57% of studied sites. Crayfish occurred in a wide range of habitats, ranging from near-pristine streams to regulated stretches. The highest crayfish numbers (catch per unit of effort) were found at sites with diverse substrata and dense canopies. However, we did not find any strictly rule governing crayfish abundance, because many suitable habitats were crayfishless. Fragmentation and degradation of habitats in the light of crayfish requirements are discussed. Subsequent phase of research will be focused on building of habitat-explicit models of crayfish presence/absence and abundance, respectively
