Descr. články - journal articles Language Slovak Country Czech Republic Annotation Abstract Gout is a metabolically-related joint disease, characterized by recurrent episodic arthritis. The recent epidemiological study suggests that the incidence of hyperuricemia and gout in many countries has risen especially in recent decades. A possible explanation may be a decreased physical activity level and changes in eating habits. The patients lifestyle is one of the key factors contributing to the development of hyperuricemia. For patients, an important part of therapy is non-pharmacological treatment through changes in lifestyle factors such as dietary measures, weight control, and adequate hydration and exercise. Lifestyle changes can lead to beneficial health changes in patients. The relationships between serum uric acid levels, hyperuricemia, obesity, and metabolic syndrome are well established. Higher serum uric acid concentration positively correlates with body mass index (BMI) and metabolic syndrome. The reduction of BMI may lead to improved hyperuricemia in patients. Other important changes include stopping alcohol consumption, reducing the intake of sweetened beverages, increasing the intake of dairy products, no eating organ meats, sea fish, sausages. Descr. články - journal articles Language English Country New Zealand Annotation High mountain ranges such as the Tibetan Plateau with an average altitude above 4500 m are topographically complex formations. Elevational gradients, physiographic diversity and climatic heterogeneity have led to highly biodiverse ecosystems in these regions. Mountain ranges can be seen as cradles of evolution and harbour, due to their unique characteristics, a high number of highly adapted species. At the same time these areas are hard to access and therefore taxonomic information is limited. Here we describe a new Acricotopus (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) larval morphotype occurring in lakes and ponds of differing salinity and water depths located on the Southern and Central Tibetan Plateau. The description is based on larvae and their genetics (ribosomal 18S, 28S and mitochondrial COI sequences) collected from a shallow pond in close proximity to the large saline lake Selin Co. Larvae of Acricotopus indet. morphotype incurvatus are characterized by a mentum with a cluster of lateral teeth, partially folded inwards, a mandible with a toothed lobe in addition to four inner teeth and a sclerotized plate positioned behind the mentum. Up to now, these morphological features have only been found in early instars of other Acricotopus species. Colorless Euglena (Astasia) longa resembles a bleached E. gracilis. To evaluate the role of bleaching in E. longa evolution, the effect of streptomycin, a plastid protein synthesis inhibitor, and ofloxacin, a plastid DNA gyrase inhibitor, on E. gracilis and E. longa growth and plastid DNA content were compared. E. gracilis growth was unaffected by streptomycin and ofloxacin. Quantitative PCR analyses revealed a time dependent loss of plastid genes in E. gracilis demonstrating that bleaching agents produce plastid gene deletions without affecting cell growth. Streptomycin and ofloxacin inhibited E. longa growth indicating that it requires plastid genes to survive. This suggests that evolutionary divergence of E. longa from E. gracilis was triggered by the loss of a cytoplasmic metabolic activity also occurring in the plastid. Plastid metabolism has become obligatory for E. longa cell growth. A process termed "intermittent bleaching", short term exposure to subsaturating concentrations of reversible bleaching agents followed by growth in the absence of a bleaching agent, is proposed as the molecular mechanism for E. longa plastid genome reduction. Various non-photosynthetic lineages could have independently arisen from their photosynthetic ancestors via a similar process.
