AnnotationWe consider a non-ideal hot pion gas with the dynamically fixed number of particles in the model with the λφ4interaction. The effective Lagrangian for the description of such a system is obtained after dropping the terms responsible for the change of the total particle number. Reactions π+π−↔π0π0, which deter-mine the isospin balance of the medium, are permitted. Within the self-consistent Hartree approximation we compute the effective pion mass, thermodynamic characteristics of the system and the variance of the particle number at temperatures above the critical point of the induced Bose–Einstein condensation when the pion chemical potential reaches the value of the effective pion mass. We analyze conditions for the con-densate formation in the process of thermalization of an initially non-equilibrium pion gas. The normalized variance of the particle number increases with a temperature decrease but remains finite in the critical point of the Bose–Einstein condensation. This is due to the non-perturbative account of the interaction and is in contrast to the ideal-gas case. In the kinetic regime of the condensate formation the variance is shown to stay finite also

AnnotationChironomid stratigraphic changes were studied in three man-made reservoirs situated in a region intensely used for mining in the past (Banska Stiavnica, Central Europe). The reservoirs were built in the first half of the 18th century and are remnants of a former hydro-energetic system that provided water for mining and smelting facilities until the 1920s. Sediment cores spanning the last 170- 200 years were sampled and dated. A total of 58 taxa were identified, with the most common taxa being Cladotanytarsus mancus-type, Polypedilum nubeculosum-type, Procladius spp. and Tanytarsus spp. Changes in the subfossil assemblages suggest that all reservoirs followed similar developmental trends. The low number of chironomid remains and the prevalence of littoral and rheophilic taxa characterize the initial phase, with severe water level fluctuations and unproductive conditions. A dramatic shift in both the qualitative and quantitative structure of the chironomid assemblages accompanied the decline of mining activities in the region. The second period of reservoir development was linked to changes in sediment composition and an increase of sediment organic content. In this phase, chironomids indicate nutrient enrichment, and the development of a hypoxic profundal zone, and complex littoral habitats. Since the 1970s, changes in the assemblage structure indicate a reduction in the profundal fauna and an increasing importance of the littoral taxa. Despite the significantly different usage of the reservoirs after the mining phase (recreation and angling vs drinking water supply) the changes in chironomid assemblages were fairly similar and indicated nearly identical developmental trajectories

AnnotationWe propose to use the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to uncover non-statistical differences between events created in heavy ion collisions within the same centrality class. The advantage of the method over other approaches which are currently in use, is that it is sensitive to any difference between the events and is not restricted to simple moments of the distribution of hadrons. The particular application examined here is the identification of the fireball decay due to spinodal fragmentation and/or sudden rise of the bulk viscosity.

AnnotationWe propose Kolmogorov-Smirnov test as a means for recognising event-by-event fluctuations of rapidity distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Such fluctuations may be induced by the spinodal decomposition of the rapidly expanding system during the 1st order quark-hadron phase transition

AnnotationHanbury-Brown and Twiss correlations of bremsstrahlung photons produced in hadronic collisions at very high energies show intermittent features. The phenomenon is due to large longitudinal dimensions of the space-time evolution of hadronic collisions and to the fact that the rapidity of a bremsstrahlung photon need not be close to the rapidity of the charged particle radiating the photon.
