AnnotationThe extant writings of Crates the Cynic include a poem about a city called Travelling Bag (Pero). It is a peculiar example of uniting the Cynic literary expression (tropos) with Cynic way of life (bios). The paper focuses on two aspects of the poem. The first one concerns the poem's form: It shows the tendency to parody the poetic authority (Homer), mixing jest with seriousness. The second one, concerning its content, deals with the Cynic "political" views and elucidates the progress from Diogenian topics (self-sufficiency, life in accordance with nature) to new, Cratetian issues (philanthropy, voluntary poverty, disapproval of war). However, the underlying motivation remains Socratic, namely philosophy as a means helping the human community to achieve practical wisdom.

AnnotationAfter disproving Meletus, Socrates begins the next part of his defense in the court by explaining his activities. He explains to a hypothetical opponent what he considers to be really shameful. To illustrate his speech, he uses the analogy of demigods who fell in the Trojan war. He focuses on the son of the goddess Thetis, i.e. Achilles, the most famous fighter in Homer's Iliad. According to Socrates' interpretation Achilles preferred to avenge the death of his friend Patroclus rather than undergo something shameful although he knew that he would die. Did Plato's Socrates aim to arouse anger or outrage of his judges by being like Thetis' son willing to die for a rightful cause? What was the real purpose of his comparison with Achilles? The aim of this paper is to examine the reason why Socrates drew a parallel between his own and Achilles' pursuance.
