AnnotationFrom 2015 onwards, the parameters of the end-of-waste status for refuse-derived fuels have been defined in Slovak legislation. These parameters were adopted in view of the increasing number of pyrolysis and gasification technologies producing liquid and gaseous energy carriers from different types of waste. The present paper addresses the appropriateness and adequacy of the exiting quality standards for the production and use of alternative secondary fuel, in the form in which they are currently in effect in Slovak environmental legislation, as well as the ability of the existing pyrolysis process to comply with those standards. With respect to the issue of the appropriateness and adequacy of the exiting quality standards, we propose new threshold values for parameters that have been proposed inappropriately as well as for undefined parameters. Regarding the ability of the existing pyrolysis process to comply with effective quality standards for alternative secondary fuel from waste, we present a comparison of the values of parameters available from the existing and upcoming pyrolysis-type facilities with the threshold values defined in the first part of the paper and identification of the most problematic parameters (those where the actual values most often exceed the threshold values defined in the first part of the paper). The final section of the paper deals with the results of testing runs of a pyrolysis facility using real RDF waste (with relatively high Cl content) and the important implications of these results for the issue of gaseous secondary fuels produced from waste

AnnotationThe effect of applying organo-zeolitic (OZ) amendment in supporting phytoremediation of a copper mine waste dump, using a substrate obtained from L'ubietov a, Central Slovakia, was studied. Three plant growth substrates were prepared: (i) the untreated substrate sample from the contaminated site (D–O), (ii) the contaminated sample treated with OZ material, with 82% D–O and 18% OZ (DOþOZ), (iii) the soil from a reference site (R). The largest amount of dry biomass was obtained from the DOþOZ sample. Whole plants grown on the original substrate (D–O) were accumulating a high concentration of Cu (3057mg kg 1). The plants root grown on DOþOZ sample accumulated highest Cu concentrations (3127mg kg 1), but in their aerial part, only 83.54mg kg 1 was accumulated. The translocation factor’s lower than the unit values prove that these plant species do not transfer heavy metals from root to shoot, this is why their heavy metal excluder role is evident. The value of the bioconcentration factor of the DOþOZ root/substrate obtained to be greater than the unit for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Co, Ni, and Mn, suggests the OZ material’s positive contribution in the phytoremediation process that can be applied for these waste dumps.

AnnotationFrom 2015 onwards, the parameters of the end-of-waste status for waste-derived fuels are defined in the Slovak environmental legislation. These parameters were adopted with regard to the increasing number of pyrolysis and gasification technologies producing liquid and gaseous energy carriers from different types of waste. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the extent of these end-ofwaste parameters for gaseous and liquid fuels produced from waste as well as the levels of threshold values defined for each of these parameters. The review also includes the identification of parameters which do not have threshold values established. The main part of the article is focused on the comparison of the values of these parameters available from the existing different pyrolysis facilities (only for liquid secondary fuels) as well as values of these parameters for both – liquid and gaseous fuels from upcoming pyrolysis facilities, (currently under development), with the threshold values established in the first part of the article. In the final section, problem parameters are identified (those, whose actual values most often exceed the threshold values defined in the first part of the article). Finally, summary of all parameters, for which the current legislative definition needs to be critically adjusted, is given

AnnotationBy now, does not suffice to evaluate companies only from an economic point of view, but it is necessary to look at the business and the social and environmental context. Environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources is also reflected in the growth of interest in the area of environmental and social research in the industry. This fact highlights the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR), according to which the environmental area, the concept of the same weight as economic and social level. The environmental consequences of the company are in advanced economies communicated not only with experts but becomes of interest to the whole society and an integral part of evaluating the success of socio-economic development. The study aims to quantitatively analyse and confirm the existence of a direct and indirect dependence on the number of businesses in individual EU countries to voluntarily implement environmental concepts of social responsibility in the form of environmental management and audit, EMAS. The object of quantitative analysis are selected EU countries.
