AnnotationWithin the Poodří nature reserve and the Odra River old parallel channel, Slaňáky, various forms of phosphorus were investigated due to increased high concentrations of total phosphorus (Ptot) in the surface water. Surface water samples were subjected to chemical analyses using absorption spectrophotometry (Ptot and P-PO43-) and accompanying parameters (t, O2, pH, Cond, TSS ) were measured. Next, grain size analysis of the sediment and sediment analyses using X-ray fluorescence were carried out (P, Fe, Al, Ca, Si, K, Mn, S, etc.). The seasonality of Ptot concentrations in the water was not confirmed, the reservoir behaved as a pool. The concentrations of the dissolved inorganic form P- PO43- were low when compared to Ptot, thus suspended phosphorus prevailed. This may be related to the low depth of the given water body, where stratification does not occur in contrast to deep water bodies. However, sediment resuspension is frequent, and phosphorus largely accumulates. The concentrations of Ptot in the sediment ranged around 4900 mg/kg, where the inorganic form prevailed (87.24 – 93.73 %) over the organic (6.27 – 12.76 %). At the same time, the sediment samples were abundant for sand fractions (2 – 0.03 mm), 47.86 – 60.89 %, and finest silt and clay (< 0.063 mm), 33.07 – 44.60 %.

AnnotationThe southwest part of Cameroon is composed of a range of geological structures and sedimentary basins, whose geological history dates from the Cretaceous, and their establishment would have originated from the opening of the South Atlantic. Among these structures, the most important is the Cameroon Volcanic Line, generally denoted CVL, followed by the southern part of the Central African Shear Zone (CASZ) called the Foumban Shear Zone (FSZ), the Ntem Complex, the Benue Trough, the northern margin of the Congo Craton, and many others. The major structures identified in this part are formed as a result of geodynamic activity between the Oligocene and the recent period, to which we can add the volcanism that exists along with the continental limit. The XGM201e_2159 model is used to highlight the geological structures of Southwestern Cameroon. First, we separated the regional and residual anomalies from Bouguer gravity data. Then, we used a combination of filters to enhance the signature of the residual anomalies in Southwest Cameroon. These filters identified various geological structures in the area. Finally, we applied the enhanced horizontal gradient amplitude (EHGA) and multi-scale horizontal derivative of the vertical derivative (MSHDVD) methods to reveal the geological contacts, allowing us to establish the corresponding structural map of the region. In addition, the results obtained in this study are the first to precisely define the circumferential demarcation of the continental and oceanic expansions of Mount Cameroon, while clearly illustrating the Bao, Bomana, Tiko, and Ekona faults that extend to the Bakassi Peninsula and the Douala outlet. Furthermore, they highlight the strike–slip faults in the summit vicinity. The structural map shows that most of the geological boundaries identified in the area are trending in the NE–SW, NNE–SSW, ENE–WSW, N–S, and NW–SE directions.

AnnotationThe analyzed sediments were taken from the man-made reservoirs (Velka Richnava, Rozgrund and Vindsachta) located in an area intensively mined for polymetallic ores since the end of the eleventh century (Banska Stiavnica region, Central Europe). The aims of this study were to determine the radioactivity of natural (226Ra, 228Th, 210Pb) and artificial (137Cs and 241Am) radionuclides, compare the radionuclides’ distribution, and indicate the correlation of radioisotopes and their origin related to sediment properties. Two analytical techniques were used. 228Th, 226Ra, 241Am, and 137Cs were measured by means of gamma spectrometry and 210Pb was determined by its daughter radionuclide 210Po using alpha spectrometry. The results showed that the highest mean level of 226Ra (42.6 Bq·kg−1), 228Th (49.7 Bq·kg−1) and 210Pb (75.2 Bq·kg−1) was in the sediments collected from Rozgrund. The radioactivity of 137Cs and 241Am were present at a higher level in the layer related to Chernobyl (1986) accident and nuclear weapon test (1950/1960). The distribution of natural radionuclides was quite similar in all reservoirs. Chemometric analysis confirmed the radionuclides’ origin and correlation between the analyzed parameters.

AnnotationCenotes (sinkholes), formed by the dissolution of the carbonate rock, are the most common waterbodies on the Yucatan Peninsula. Despite their unique features and great amount in the region, our knowledge on the biota of cenotes remains fragmentary. Within the present study we analysed chironomid remains from surface sediment of ten cenotes situated in SE Mexico. In total, 20 taxa of 17 genera were recorded, and the total diversity was estimated to ~30 taxa. The most common taxa were Polypedilum (Tripodura) sp., Tanytarsus ortoni-type, Fittkauimyia sp., Labrundinia sp. and Endotribelos sp. There was a great variability in head capsule abundance among cenotes, ranging from 1 to 64 individuals per site with significantly higher number of remains recorded in open cenotes compared to the closed, cavern types. The results indicate that beside ecological features, such as low trophy, oxygen depletion, simplified habitat structure and fish predation, there are also taphonomical processes connected to the specific nature of cenotes that can hinder the accumulation of biological remains in the sediment. We conclude that due to poor sedimentation and preservation of remains, cenotes have limited potential for palaeolimnological studies

AnnotationThe upper reaches of the Bistrita drainage system were selected as a natural test site to determine the geogenic and anthropogenic input into fluvio-lacustrine systems in humid mid-latitude morphoclimatic zones. The reason for this selection lies in the complex geology and its metallogenic evolution leading to a great variety of Fe, Mn, U, and polymetallic sulfides ore deposits. It sparked an intense mining activity during the past centuries with a strong impact on the drainage system similar to many mineralized sites in the world which are still under exploitation. Sediment samples from Bistrita River were analyzed by means of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), near-infrared (NIR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy (μ-Raman). Our results revealed that the chemical and mineralogical built-up of the stream sediments is mainly geogenic, with most of the trace elements accumulated in the river sediments derived from the source rocks exposed in catchment area of the River Bistrita. A strong input by man has been detected in the drainage system near abandoned mining sites. The trace elements are mainly accommodated in the structure of detrital minerals representative of the clastic aureole around the source rocks, and to a lesser extent adsorbed onto the surface of clay minerals. The REE incorporated into muscovite furnish evidence of having derived from the source rocks, prevalently mica schists exposed by supergene processes in the provenance area and rule out a neoformation of clay minerals on transport and deposition
