AnnotationContributing student pedagogy requires students to produce artifacts (contributions) for the purpose of contributing to other peers' learning, and encourages students to value these peer contributions. A free web-based tool called PeerWise was created by Paul Denny at the University of Auckland to provide support for the implementation of contributing student pedagogy. It supports the authoring of multiple choice questions that other students can use and provide feedback on. A lot of institutions throughout the world use PeerWise. This paper describes case studies of various approaches to the use of the PeerWise system within 8 computer science courses taught by 3 teachers at the Matej Bel University (Introduction to Informatics, Semestral Project, Database Systems and Multimedia courses). We successfully used this system in 7 courses. The system was used by 273 students during 2 academic years (from summer semester 2014 until winter semester 2015). We used it as a presentation tool, motivation tool, learning tool for preparing for exams, exploring tool for understanding the design of this system for educational purposes. Our students like to use this system if they see the benefit of it for their learning and for passing the courses. So this is a task for their teachers to better understand the possibilities of the system and to motivate themselves to effectively use this system in their courses.

AnnotationPeerWise is a web-based system developed at the University of Auckland which supports Contributing Student Learning. Contributing Student Pedagogy means a pedagogy that encourages students to contribute to the learning of others and to value the contributions of others. PeerWise is typically used for collaborative learning of students through multiplechoice questions created and discussed by them. Inspired by the high level of engagement and enjoyment exhibited by those playing video games, PeerWise includes some simple game-like elements. Developing and answering questions and providing feedback on them through the PeerWise system can be involved in almost all types of higher education standard and distance courses. Since 2013/2014 academic year we have been using PeerWise in six computer science courses at the Matej Bel University. We used it as part of students’ required coursework for developing of higher order cognitive skills, motivating student learning and as a presentation tool. In this paper we describe our preliminary results and findings from our experience. Peerwise was used by 95% of students in our 2013/2014 pilot use in two courses; 79% of final questionnaire participants enjoyed creating questions and learning from other PeerWise users and 88% of final questionnaire participants found the activity with PeerWise useful. We found out that creating student-developed multiple-choice questions repository is a meaningful activity that can be used to increase students’ interest in various topics covering the area of their course learning material.

AnnotationMultiple-choice question (MCQ) banks created by students have a potential to enhance their engagement in a course learning material. PeerWise is a web-based system for collaborative learning of students through MCQs created and discussed by them. We started to use this tool at the Matej Bel University in two Computer Science courses in the summer semester 2014 (57 students of Applied Informatics first degree programme). In this first use case, we used PeerWise as a motivation and presentation tool. At the end of semester we wanted to know if students like to use PeerWise and if they find the activity with PeerWise useful. We describe our preliminary results and findings and plans for the future
