Human civilization has became the geological force, which is substantially changing the character of our planet. Several scientists therefore distinguishthe era since the start of the industrial revolution, at the latest since the year 1950, as a distinctive geologic epoch called Anthropocene. The problem is that in this epoch the capacity of the Earth system to support our civilization decreases. The growing existential risks are the reason why it is not sufficient to deal just with the symptoms of the crisis, but it is necessary to cope also with its driving forces. These drivers of unfavourable development can be divided into several groups – physical ones (e.g. the growth of human population, urbanization and consumption), paradigmatic (e.g. the heritage of mechanical paradigm, underestimation of the complexity of the living systems) and cultural-value ones (e.g. cultivation of greed andshallowness, allienation of man from nature). In the contribution presented we devote to the driving forces connected with the valid scientific paradigm. The current „economic mantra“ of the infinite economic growth is based on mechanical perception of the world, lacking to reflect its complexity and consequently also wider connections and consequences of human activities. We consider as necessity the paradigm shift towards more systemic and holistic thinking and scientific research. To achieve this we will examine several selected aspects of ecological complexity, which we consider highly important at the turning point of the society direction, the use of natural resources and ecosystem management. Each ecological system has its natural level of complexity, at which its vitality is the highest, and therefore we should strive to preserve and protect this complexity.
