It contributes to the discourse of historical narration and fictionality, in the strict sense it offers the new evidence contributing to the detection of authenticity of Beňovský's memoirs as the historical source and literary artefact. The authors consider the nature of the work, the causes of bemusement and heroization of Beňovský's personality with respect to the author's/artist's intentions, as well as publishing motivation which counted on the period readers' tastes and perception preferences. The authors conclude that Beňovský's memories are sophisticated "hybrid of fact and fiction," language game that creates a "reality effect", particularly in the chapters devoted to the activities of Mauritius Beňovský in his Kamchatka banishment and in his colonial service on an island of Madagascar. In this respect, the memoirs are very unreliable source and should be revised on the basis of comparison with other sources of different nature and content.
