As a consequence of this he stressed, among other things, the power of Spanish derivative system. Among the examples that supported his thesis abound words with structure [a-N-ado]: acanelado, atabacado, amoratado, atigrado, anubarrado, abarquillado, acaramelado, etc. Later, Malkiel devoted to this type of formations two articles (1941a and 1941b), where he noticed certain peculiarities, as these voices reflect the verbal action without the previous existence of an equivalent verb. Moreover, he realized that “there are no words in French equivalent to abolsado, acanastillado, agranitado, nor qualifications as witty and savory as agabachado, agallegado, ajesuitado” (1941a: 283). The Russian linguist placed the climax of this type of formations by the year 1650. However, elsewhere (Šinková 2014) we have shown the productivity of the pattern [A-X-ADO] also for the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The aim of this article is through a contrastive analysis between the Spanish and the neighbouring Romance languages (French, Portuguese, Italian and Catalan) to identify the parasynthetic paradigm [A-X-AR] as a significant marker of Spanish linguistic identity –and therefore national– in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
