While we can make do with a milled surface for tiling and flooring, we have more sophisticated products such as garden furniture, etc. that require final surface sanding. The article focuses on the effect of thermal modification on the quality of the ground surface. It compares the surface quality of the ground surface of native woods oak, spruce and meranti with their thermally treated variants at temperatures of 160°C, 180°C, 200°C and 220°C. Quality is examined on a surface sanded with a belt sander with 80-grit sandpaper. It points to the fact that the process of a thermal modification slightly impairs the quality of the ground surface. However, when evaluating a surface on a larger scale, the quality of the created surface is influenced mainly by the "natural roughness of the wood" by the opening of anatomical elements of the wood, which are the primary source of increased roughness. Another goal of the paper was to select a suitable separation technique that would be sufficient to effectively capture the largest possible dispersion of fractions in the beech lumber milling process. Granulometric analysis showed that under the given conditions in the milling process the largest proportion of coarse and medium coarse fraction is formed and particles with a size smaller than 32 mu m are not formed. For this reason, it is our recommendation to choose a combination of dry mechanical separators together with fabric filters, as mechanical separators are able to capture mainly larger particle fractions. Fabric filters would serve to trap any finer particles, thus saving the user from greater wear of the coarse and medium coarse fractions, which would increase the wear of the filter cloth to an increased extent. Slovensko Form.deskr. články - journal articles Jazyk dok. angličtina Krajina Švajčiarsko Anotácia The aim of this paper was to determine the particle size composition of wood dust emission from CNC milling of natural wood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and evaluate the associated occupational exposure risks. The paper is focused on some of the most commonly used materials in the woodworking and furniture industry, i.e., solid wood (beech, oak, and spruce) and composite materials (MDF panels). In addition to the influence of the machined material, the effect of the technical-technological parameters, namely, feed speed and depth of cut on the particle size distribution, was also investigated. The selected values of the technical-technological parameters used in this study followed the common work practice in small wood processing companies. The particle size distribution was evaluated by using sieve analysis of samples from the total mass of collected wood dust. The results demonstrated that machining of natural wood is characterized mostly by the formation of coarse dust fractions (2 mm–1 mm sieves), whilst the processing of MDF was associated with generation of fine dust fractions with a size below 100 m. The results obtained can be used for optimizing the technological programs of CNC milling machines, thus, reducing the occupational exposure to harmful wood dust emissions in the wood-processing industry.
